“We are the places we see” – an attempt at a Kierkegaardian project
This project, consisting of an exhibition of artists working and living in Copenhagen, is the final development of my artist-in-residence at the Fabrikken for Kunst og Design, hosted by Galleri Christoffer Egelund in Copenhagen.
The starting point of this exhibition is the aesthetic stage in the philosophy of Soeren Kierkegaard (1818-1855).
Kierkegaard spent his whole life in Copenhagen, never leaving the city apart from a solitary trip to Berlin, where he took endless walks through the city, wandering aimlessly, losing himself in the crowd like a “flaneur”.
The project is based upon the rediscovery of memories (individual and/or collective) by way of the historical sedimentation of the city and takes inspiration from the figure of the “flaneur” as illustrated by Walter Benjamin in his text “Paris – capital of the XIX century”, which describes the poet Baudelaire’s life in Paris. Beginning with the idea that “we are the places we see”, the participants to the show, who, like modern-day explorers, will then have to immerse themselves in and infiltrate the social and historical sedimentary layers of the city, layers, which irresistibly shape and form this city, mapping a vertical geography of the place.
The artists will venture out and subconsciously explore precisely the places that they “know” and by doing so bring to light something that at one time was part of their very essence, a distant memory, deeply buried or simply forgotten (the pavement where you played as a child, a shop window, the park bench where you had your first kiss, your grandmother’s house or the factory that took its place), in order to illustrate how pieces of the cityscape and their layers can also contain human memories and raw emotions and experiences, that belong as much to the city as to its millions of individuals.
We are the spaces that we have around us, we internalize them, they shape us but also we shape them.
Questo progetto, che consiste in una mostra collettiva di artisti residenti a Copenhagen, è lo sviluppo finale della mia Residenza alla Fabbrikken for Kunst og Design di Copenhagen, ospitato dalla Galleria Christoffer Egelund.
Il punto di partenza della mostra è il concetto di stadio estetico nella filosofia di Soeren Kierkegaard (1818-1855).
Kierkegaard passò l'intera vita nella capitale danese, senza mai lasciarla se non per un solitario viaggio a Berlino, città nella quale si perse in lunghe passeggiate senza meta tra la folla che calcava le vie del centro, come un vero e proprio “flaneur”.
Il progetto è basato sulla riscoperta del concetto sviluppato da Walter Benjamin di città come sedimentazione cronologica di strati, come il celebre pensatore ha illustrato in “Parigi, capitale del XIX secolo”, in cui descrive la vita di Baudelaire a Parigi. Partendo dall'idea che siamo ciò che vediamo, i partecipanti al progetto si sono immersi come moderni esploratori nelle varie stratificazioni in cui la città danese si è formata nel tempo, creandone una vera e propria mappa verticale e cronologica.
Gli artisti hanno lasciato il proprio inconscio libero di fare luce sui punti della città che loro conoscevano e che riconoscevano come momenti della loro vita passata; zone oramai quasi interamente scomparse o semplicemente dimenticate nel profondo della memoria (la vetrina di un negozio che non c'è più, la casa della nonna dove giocavano da bambini, la panchina sulla quale hanno dato il primo bacio, etc). Questo disvelamento ha dato la possibilità di mostrare come la città è cresciuta ed è cambiata anche attraverso la nostra vita individuale e privata che si è quindi andata mescolando con quella pubblica e collettiva.
Gli spazi che vediamo durante la nostra vita sono formati, significati e vissuti da noi ma anche hanno formato la nostra memoria, cioè quello che siamo intimamente.
